GLOSSARY TERM

Flaxseed Oil

Flaxseed oil is a nutrient-dense vegetable oil derived from the seeds of the flax plant (Linum usitatissimum). It is one of the richest plant-based sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid. ALA serves as a precursor to the longer-chain omega-3s, EPA and DHA, which are critical for reducing systemic inflammation and supporting cardiovascular health. In metabolic protocols, flaxseed oil is often used for its ability to provide high-quality energy without triggering an insulin spike.

Beyond its fatty acid profile, flaxseed oil contains lignans, which possess antioxidant properties and may help in modulating estrogen metabolism. During nutrient priming phases, the high concentration of ALA in flaxseed oil helps to repair cellular membranes and improve insulin sensitivity. By providing a concentrated source of healthy fats, it assists in signaling nutritional abundance to the hypothalamus, helping to break the survival shift and promote the utilization of stored body fat for fuel.
